WISMAR / ROSTOCK-WARNEMÜNDE / GOTHENBURG: Aker Yards Germany with sites in Wismar and Rostock-Warnemünde introduces newly developed RoRo and RoPax vessels to the market at the RoRo 2008 exhibition in Gothenburg (Sweden) from May 20 until 22. Both types Aker RoRo 52 and Aker RoPax 40 were developed following the design philosophy "Green - Efficient -Smart".

This means special emphasis has been paid to create a small environmental footprint through very low fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. Furthermore efficient energy management, protected fuel tank arrangements without any contact with the outer shell of the hull, HFO service tanks for low sulphur HFO and an efficient ballast water management contribute to a superior environmental performance. The vessels can be tailored to special trades and needs, thus guaranteeing competitive operation costs to the customers.

The innovative RoRo and RoPax vessels are further examples of the strategy of Aker Yards Germany with increased focus to higher value added specialized ships. The repositioning is aimed at further strengthening the yards competitiveness in the international market in a long-term perspective. Besides RoRo and RoPax projects, other examples of a shift to more advanced solutions from Germany are firm orders for ice-breaking and ice-going tonnage and projects for specialized tankers.

The type Aker RoRo 52 is a large shot-sea RoRo vessel with 5,200 lane meters for trailers. With 14,400 t deadweight the ships are 220 m long and 30 m wide and will reach a service speed of 23 knots. The design can be tailored to various customer needs and has a modular machinery concept, a highly optimized hull design rendering very low fuel consumption and an effective ramp configuration for quick turnaround times. A model of this type is presented at the stand of Aker Yards (D 25) at the RoRo 2008 exhibition in Gothenburg.

The type Aker RoPax 40 is a large and fast short-sea overnight combined freight / passenger ferry with 4,000 lane meters for trailers and additional space for cars. With 11,000 t deadweight the ships will be 230.0 m long and 31.6 m wide and will reach the high service speed of up to 24 knots. They have a quick turnaround ramp configuration, a modular machinery concept, an optimized hull design as well as very low fuel consumption and are prepared for "safe return to port" regulations. The new design can accommodate up to 1,000 passengers.

Aker Yards Germany has long-standing experiences for decades in building passenger ships, RoRo and RoLo (roll on/roll off and lift on/lift off) vessels and combined freight / passenger ferries for trailers and railway cargo. Since April 2008 the first of two combined freight / passenger ferries of the type Aker RoPax 55 for Stena Rederi AB in Gothenburg (Sweden) has been under construction. The new Stena ships will have a gross tonnage of 63,600 what is 25 per cent higher than for vessels of this type under service and 5,500 lane meters for trailers (increase by 35 %) plus 728 lane meters for cars. After delivery in the first and third quarters of 2010 respectively they will be the world's largest RoPax ferries. A model of the type Aker RoPax 55 is presented at the Gothenburg exhibition for the first time.
