WISMAR / ROSTOCK-WARNEMÜNDE: Aker Yards Germany has started the production of the world's largest combined freight and passenger ferries. The first steel plate for Stena's new RoPax was cut at its site in Warnemünde on Thursday, 10 April. Yard number 159 is the first of two vessels of the type Aker RoPax 55 ordered by Stena Rederi AB in Gothenburg in Sweden. The contract was announced in November 2006 with a total contract value of approximately EUR 400 million. Delivery of the vessels is scheduled in the first and third quarter 2010 respectively. The production will be carried out in a split method between the two Aker Yards Germany sites in Warnemünde and Wismar.
The innovative and customer-tailored ferries are examples of the strategy Aker Yards Germany has set previously, with increased focus to higher value added specialized ships. The repositioning is aimed at further strengthening the yards competitiveness in the international market in a long-term perspective. This leverages the combined experience within the Aker Yards group. Besides RoRo and RoPax projects, other examples of a shift to more advanced solutions from Germany are recent orders for ice-breaking and ice-going tonnage and projects for specialized tankers.
The new Stena ships will have 63,600 GT. By this figure which is 35 per cent higher than for vessels of this type under service they will be the worldwide largest RoPax vessels. The ferries were developed and designed together with Aker Yards Rauma in Finland and Stena RoRo in Sweden. The shipyards of Aker Yards Germany have experience in building passenger ships and RoRo vessels.
