The first Chinese liquefied natural gas carrier, "Dapeng Sun", has just been delivered to its owners China LNG Shipping. The LNG carrier has been built in the framework of a Cooperation Agreement between Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding (Group) Co., a yard of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) and Aker Yards in France, former Chantiers de l'Atlantique. Aker Yards has provided the design as well as technical assistance throughout the entire construction and testing period.

The experience of the technology cooperation between Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding and Aker Yards has been positive. It demonstrates that for LNG Carriers, the most valuable and complex merchant vessels, the combination of the power of a large scale Chinese shipyard, such as Hudong-Zhonghua, with the special expertise and technical support of Aker Yards can overcome all start-up challenges and lead finally to convincing results.
"During the delivery ceremony I proudly received thanks and very positive statements from the owners and from the Chinese yard regarding the attitude, performance and contribution of Aker Yards's LNG team in Shanghai" says Michael vom Baur, Senior Vice President and Head of LNG activities for Aker Yards ASA.
"I think the team, including Dante Yvon, General Manager of Aker Yards' Shanghai representation Office, Yann Penduff, Aker Yards' LNG project permanent technical representative as well as to all other involved staff of AY LNG Unit and AY SA, St.Nazaire, did a great job", says vom Baur.
The ship is ABS classed and has a No.96 membrane containment system (under license of GTT).
Michael vom Baur underlines, that "technical cooperation, as in the case of standard membrane LNGC with HZ, is a good opportunity to commercialize AY's know how in market segments, where we actually could not deliver ships from AY's own yards for competitive market prices, with the positive effect, that we are able to maintain competence-teams and thus the option for future business on our own shipyards".
There will be more LNG carriers of the same type delivered under the same framework agreement, at least four more for the Guangdong and Fujian Terminals in 2008-2010. Aker Yards and CSSC are presently also exploring possibilities for future long term cooperation. 
China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) is an extra-large conglomerate and state-authorized investment institution directly administered by the central government of China. Under it's wing there are totally 60 sole proprietorship enterprises and shareholding institutions including a batch of the most powerful and some renowned shipbuilding and shiprepairing yards, research and design institutes, marine-related equipment manufacturers and trading firms in China.
Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding (Group) Company Ltd., one of the five shipbuilding centers under CSSC, is a state-owned enterprises group with a diversification in building merchant and naval ships, manufacturing heavy-duty marine diesel engines and constructing huge steel structures. It's facilities are sited in on an area of 1,35 million m² in Pudong New Area in east Shanghai, where approximately 13.000 workers and staff are employed.
